Eduard Matevosyan

  • Edward Matevosyan graduated from the Sculpture Department of Yerevan Arts College after Terlemezyan in Armenia. He began his artistic career as a sculptor, and in 1966, two of his works were included in an exhibition organized by Avangard, a leading newspaper of the time. Although he started as a sculptor, Edward also painted throughout his early years. Over time, painting became his preferred artistic pursuit. He later earned another degree from the Art Department of the Pedagogical Institute after Khachatur Abovyan in Armenia. His work soon drew the attention of the world-renowned sculptor and artist Ervand Kochar, whose critique consisted only of Praise. Throughout the years, Matevosyan held numerous exhibitions both in Armenia and internationally—including the United States, France, Germany, and more. The artist’s parents were natives of Kars (Western Armenia), a heritage that deeply influences his art. This background brings a sense of nostalgia and sorrow to his work, often transporting viewers to the towns and villages of Western Armenia. Edward is especially fond of the narrow streets of old Yerevan, which frequently appear in his paintings. His landscapes often include soft, ever-present lighting; the skies are calm and still, emphasizing the stability of the scenes below. He has an exceptional sensitivity to texture—capturing walls, stone, and clay rooftops with remarkable realism. Many of his winter landscapes radiate warmth and light, making it hard to believe they were painted with such a limited color palette. His unique approach brings fresh interpretation and vitality to the genre of landscape painting.
